Police Impersonation Scams

Don't Fall Victim to Police Impersonation Scams!

We often receive reports of scammers pretending to be from the Fairfield County Sheriff's Department, Fairfield County Police Department or other name of a non-existent law enforcement agency in Fairfield, CT. These individuals often claim you're facing legal trouble and demand a callback.

Remember:

The Fairfield Police Department will NEVER:

  • Call you demanding immediate payment to avoid arrest.
  • Request personal information over the phone.
  • Ask for payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or other unusual methods.

Here's how to protect yourself:

  • Verify: If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the department directly using their verified phone number, found on their official website or through a trusted source.
  • Never give out personal or financial information over the phone unless you initiated the call and are sure of the recipient's identity.
  • Be wary of urgency and threats. Scammers often try to pressure you into quick decisions. Take your time and verify information before acting.
  • Report suspicious calls to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at https://reportfraud.ftc.gov/.

Remember: You have the right to confirm the legitimacy of any call claiming to be from law enforcement. Stay vigilant and don't hesitate to report suspicious activity!
